The IDSA Industrial Design Excellence Awards take in place in August and one of the winners makes use of haptics to create a novel interface for users. Diebold's Vectra machine allows users to feel their way around an interface on an ATM machine.
Diebold's haptic-enhanced ATM is a concept that enables user navigation without the use of the traditional ATM input mechanisms such as keypad. The device is designed with visually impaired and illiterate people in people, while still being usable by a wider audience.
Diebold, who won a bronze medal for this design, currently have one of the most successful ATM product lines with the Opteva family of ATMs, but are looking at ways to expand usability and security by improving their products.
Motorola's RAZR V3 won a gold medal for design excellence at the awards.
The IDEA awards will be held August 27, 2005 at the IDSA 2005 National Conference in Washington, DC.
