Apple have announced details of a new mouse, the Mighty Mouse. What's so special about it? Well, it incorporates technologies of interest to sonolum, such as sensing capabilities and sonification feedback.
Using capacitive sensing technolgy, the device allows for interesting paradigms for the mouse-at-rest navigation. Four-way movement is enabled as the sensors detect left-finger/right-finger differences, in addition to left-stroke/right-stroke patterns of the Scroll Ball shown in the picture.
In addition to the interesting sensor arrangements, the Scroll Ball also features sonification feedback. Scrolling produces a type of ambient feedback, whereas clicking will generate a different informative timbre.
The sounds are actually generated from within the device by a small speaker.
