| Architects Benjamin Ball and Gaston Nogues for the Materials and Applications (M&A) Research Centre in LA have designed an installation incorporating multimedia components, including lighting and sound, at the M&A outdoor gallery. The eye-catching vortex structure gives shade and structure to the space below, enabling 'enhanced social interaction and contemplation by changing the space, color, and sound of the M&A courtyard gallery'. The movement of the sun affects the lighting changes in the space below, shining through the tinted Mylar to project fractal light patterns on the ground. The ambient sound part of the installation is not only heard, but felt as it is played through the ground to rumble at the visitors' feet. This audio-haptic effect was created by composer James Lumb and is entitled "Resonant Amplified Vortex Emitter". James Lumb is a composer and technology developer who creates multi-media installations and also goes by the name of 'Electric Skychurch' |
