| 'Score for a hole in the ground' is the winner of the first New Music Award, written by Jem Finer one of the founding members of the legendary group The Pogues. This work is truly compelling, employing natural elements as the performer of a land-based musical instrument - pure genius! The award allows Finer to follow through on his proposal to build this piece, a post-digital installation situated in a discoverable natural environment. The work is inspired by Japanese [Kyoto] water chimes and consists of underground metallic chambers, tunnels and a natural amplifying loudhorn. As the rain seeps through the tunnels it strikes the chambers, creating naturally ordered resonant pulses. These are relayed back to the listener at ground level via the loudhorn. As per the rules of the award, this piece must be exposed by September 2006 - what a treat! |
